New 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Overview
The 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid offers an added dose of fuel efficiency to what was already one of the hottest cars of 2011.
Based on the Sonata, which was a revelation last year, the 2012 Sonata Hybrid changes things up with its own unique styling and of course, a hybrid drivetrain with advanced battery technology that helps it achieve sky-high fuel economy ratings.
From the outside, there are a slew of changes that differentiate the Sonata Hybrid from its more conventionally powered sibling. Up front it features a large, hexagonal blacked out air dam and unique head/fog lights. There are also hybrid badges on the front fenders and rear, as well as different side sills (the area below the doors).
Under the hood, the Sonata Hybrid employs a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine on the Atkinson cycle that combines with an electric motor to produce 206 total horsepower. It also opts for lithium polymer battery pack, which is smaller and lighter than more traditional hybrid battery packs. The Sonata Hybrid can also operate in all-electric mode at speeds of up to 74 mph.
The 2012 Sonata Hybrid’s fuel economy ratings check in at an impressive 35 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.
Inside, the Sonata Hybrid gets a few additions for the 2012 model year. Hyundai’s BlueLink telematics system, similar to OnStar from GM, comes standard on all models. New options include a revised navigation system with seven-inch touchscreen and HD radio, and a larger panoramic sunroof. The battery pack does cut into rear cargo storage, down to 10.7 cubic feet, but the Sonata Hybrid (according to Hyundai) still gives you the most interior space amongst midsize hybrids.
The Sonata Hybrid comes with more standard features than the regular car, including dual-zone automatic climate control, push button start, Bluetooth® connectivity, USB/auxiliary audio input jakcs, and the aforementioned BlueLink system. Also available are heated front/rear seats, the new navigation system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, and leather upholstery.
Safety is a clear priority for the 2012 Sonata Hybrid and it received an IIHS Top Safety Pick award, as well as a full five-star crash test rating from the NHTSA.
